Modulation sensitivity functions ( MSFs ) of retinal ganglion cells of the pigeon were determined by recording action potentials from their end branching in the optic tectum as response indicator. The inverse Fourier transformation of a MSF is taken to represent the receptive field sensitivity function approximating the receptive field profile of a ganglion cell.
