Abstract

Intracellular pH (pHi) and buffering power of unstimulated sartorius muscle (frog) were measured with pH-sensitive microelectrodes. The mean pHi for muscle was about 0.3 units more acid than the extracellular pH in the range 7.0 to 7.2. The buffer power was 44.0 +/- SE 7.1 mM/pH unit for 19 fibres with pHi 6.83 +/- SE 0.05.
