This report focuses on young-adult development as it pertains to medical students. After a brief review of Erikson's developmental tasks, this article examines medical school stresses and pressures that impede attainment of these tasks. Medical school itself is also viewed within an Eriksonian framework, with each year presenting a series of developmental tasks that the student must overcome. The unique stresses of women medical students are also examined. Suggestions for prevention and intervention are proffered.
