In mice it has been shown that mating preference is genetically associated with the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). In the present study, an approach is described to study homologous aspects of the MHC in man. After selection of families with one or more children, a given parental HLA antigen was selected and the frequencies of the spouse's HLA antigens were determined. Assuming a random distribution, these frequencies should not be statistically different from those of the total population. Evidence is presented that this distribution is not random for a number of maternal and paternal HLA antigens.
