In Gazankulu, a rural area in South Africa, there is an acute shortage of medical doctors and other health professionals. In an attempt to improve health care delivery at the village level, a program utilizing community health workers was introduced. Here, selection criteria, the training course content, and early experiences with the implementation of the program are examined.
