The practical and theoretical considerations leading to the automated diagnostic assessment of cells in the urinary sediment by a computer-based, high-resolution system are discussed. Problems of sample preparations, sample-size requirements, coefficients of variation and computer-generated features are summarized. There are no major theoretical obstacles to achieving a workable system for the diagnosis of high-grade urothelial cancer by the proposed approach.
