Health care planning mechanisms and the dangers of the "survival of the fittest" method of reducing the size of the hospital system have led some hospitals and hospital associations to undertake programs of conversion of acute care beds, long-range citywide and statewide planning for reduction in the number of beds, and multiple use of beds, units, or entire hospitals.
