Specialized and specific biologic functions can arise as a result of genetic diversification, as well as by way of biochemical modifications of a given gene product. Additional, more detailed investigations of the structure and organization of the genome and the processes involved in the co- and post-translational modifications of polypeptide hormones may provide clues to the functions of the hormone-related peptides (cybernins) produced by peptidergic neurons.
