Abstract
Group A beta-haemolytic streptococci were isolated from 51 (9.8%) of 519 patients with pharyngitis. Throat culture results showed the mean sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of a positive Gram-stained smear of pharyngeal secretions as 70%, 89% and 69%. The data suggest that Gram staining of a smear directly from the swab is as accurate as and more speedy than a culture from the pharyngeal secretion for diagnosis of streptococcal pharyngitis.

从519例咽炎患者中的51例（9.8%）分离出A组β溶血性链球菌。咽喉培养结果显示，咽部分泌物革兰氏染色涂片呈阳性的平均敏感度、特异度和预测值分别为70%、89%和69%。数据表明，对于链球菌性咽炎的诊断，直接从拭子涂片进行革兰氏染色与咽部分泌物培养一样准确，且速度更快。
