Aerobic heterotrophic, pigment-producing lipolytic, coliform bacteria and E. coli were isolated at different sites of a small running water. After villages the bacterial numbers highly increased, whereas they decreased in the self-purification reaches between the villages. Significant differences between the numbers of heterotrophs at adjacent locations were observed. At relatively low polluted sites high correlation coefficients between the numbers of heterotrophs and those of E. coli were found.
