A postantibiotic effect (PAE) was demonstrated for various antibiotics which suppressed bacterial regrowth for at least two hours beyond the termination of a short drug exposure in vitro. Rifampin, tetracycline and erythromycin already exhibit a PAE at low concentrations. In contrast, in the case of beta-lactams high concentrations - higher than those obtained in serum during oral treatment - were needed to demonstrate a PAE of these antibiotics in vitro. The PAE phenomenon may be of clinical importance with regard to dosage regimens in antimicrobial chemotherapy.
多种抗生素都表现出抗生素后效应(PAE),即在体外短时间药物暴露结束后,这些抗生素能抑制细菌再生长至少两小时。利福平、四环素和红霉素在低浓度时就已表现出PAE。相比之下,对于β-内酰胺类抗生素,在体外要证明其PAE需要高浓度——高于口服治疗时血清中所能达到的浓度。PAE现象在抗菌化疗的给药方案方面可能具有临床重要性。
