Radiographic contrast agents (RCA) cause a profound and long-term blockade of iodine-absorption thyroid function. It was ascertained that the thyroid gland binds both iodine that splits off from a RCA and the agent itself. The changes were found in 125I-iodine binding by the thyroid gland after preadministering the hepatotropic poison CCl4 and the liver function stimulant phenobarbital. Antithyroid action of RCA is accounted for the interaction of the thyroid gland with native molecules of RCA and by their deiodination in the liver.
