Arthrography of the knee joint was performed in 12 domestic pigs using Hexabrix (meglumine and sodium ioxaglate). Conray EV (sodium and meglumine iothalamate) was used for comparison. X-ray films were taken at periodic intervals. Hexabrix was found to stay slightly longer in the joints. The animals were sacrificed at 3 different times after injection and the synovial membrane of the knee joints and the joint cartilage of the patella were assessed histologically. 3 of 6 joints showed a strictly limited focus with leukocytes in the fat pad 24 hours after the injection. In the other cases no inflammatory reactions were seen after injection of the contrast media.
