One hundred thirty-six eyes with diabetic maculopathy, which had been operated on by photocoagulation between 1976 and 1980, were followed up with regard to the morphology of the retinal changes and compared with 246 untreated eyes. Of the treated eyes, 77% showed no further progression of the microangiopathy, whereas in 80% of the untreated eyes the development of a diabetic maculopathy was observed.
