The authors' data and those from the literature on composition of the preovulatory follicle of the mammalian ovary and its morphologycal changes at ovulation are presented. Structure of some follicular components such as the granular layer, internal Ovulation is demonstrated to be accompanied with increasing interstitial edema and cellular dissociation in all structural elements of the follicle. Successive stages in the rearrangement of the follicular membranes are analysed by means of the transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Some hypotheses on main factors and mechanisms participating in ovulation are discussed.
