An attempt is here made to apply the propositions of psychoanalytic ego psychology and certain ideas from systems theory to problems in the theory of anxiety. Conscious affect experience in adults is taken as a clinical starting point. The propositions advanced place concepts of processes by which events or fantasies are located in time at the center of anxiety theory and, perhaps, of affect theory generally.
