A natriuretic factor prepared from plasma of salt loaded rats is active on a totally isolated cell free perfused rat kidney. The administration of indomethacin to the rat before the kidney perfusion is started does not modify the kidney response to the natriuretic factor. This work demonstrates that the isolated kidney is able to produce this factor and that the inhibition prostaglandins suppresses its production. Therefore, we can conclude that the presence of prostaglandins is a prerequisite for the production of natriuretic hormone by the kidney, but not for its action.U
