On a questionnaire designed to assess knowledge about responsible drinking, social drinkers performed significantly better than convicted drinking drivers. This difference was due almost entirely to the poor performance of drinking drivers reporting additional alcohol-related problems. Problem-free drinking drivers did not differ from social drinkers in performance. Exposure to education in the form of either a talk about responsible drinking or a talk plus video presentation resulted in significant improvement in performance by both problem and problem-free drinking drivers. These findings have implications for programs directed at reeducating drinking drivers.
