An attempt is made to define "chronic kidney failure" and a summation of current research regarding the etiology of this disease is presented. Current knowledge of the pathogenesis of chronic renal insufficiency is reviewed as it was presented during an introductory lecture which was presented at the 1980 annual meeting of the Austrian Society of Internal Medicine.
