From 1948 to 1977 359 patients suffering from oesophageal reflux disorders or the hiatus-hernia-complex underwent surgery at the I. Surgical clinic of the Medical Faculty Palacky-Univ. in Olomouc. In the group of 50 patients with simple paraaesophageal hernias the operative mortality came up to 4.0%. The mortality rate among patients with complicated oesophageal reflux disorders came up to 21.7%. The patients were followed up for 7.3 years on the average. In simple cases excellent and good results were achieved in 77.1%, poor results in 8.6%. The best results were obtained with the fundoplication according to Nissen-Rosetti. In the group with complicated oesophageal reflux disorders the results were excellent and good in 60% and poor in 3.3%. If possible, dilatation in combination with antireflux operation was preferred to resection of stenoses. Reoperation for recurrences of the disease were performed in 27 patients.
