The effect of benactyzine (amizyl--the central cholinolytic) and arecoline (cholinomimetic) in vitro on the 45Ca uptake by the nerve endings (synaptosomes) of the rat brain was studied. Benactyzine proved to evoke a biphasic change of the isotope uptake, whereas arecoline induced an initial rapid increase of the 45Ca uptake. Benactyzine suppressed the influence of arecoline and of depolarization on the isotope uptake. A conclusion was drawn that an increase of the 45Ca uptake under the action of arecoline was connected with activization of the Na-K canals. On the contrary, benactyzine depressed the permeability of these canals for 45Ca and activated the calcium canals proper.
