Despite the occurrence of vaginal ulcers, mucosal alterations, and toxic shock syndrome, large numbers of women continue to find vaginal tampons an acceptable and convenient method of menstrual protection. Government agencies and consumer groups are aware of the potential problems associated with tampon use and are actively concerned with surveillance and public education. Tampon manufactures have joined in this effort and continue to seek methods of improving their product and decreasing the risks associated with the use and abuse of vaginal tampons.
