A microorganism capable of assimilating aniline as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen was isolated from soil and identified as Alcaligenes faecalis. Enzyme systems catalyzing aniline oxidation are inducible. Aniline is metabolized by A. faecalis via meta-decomposition of aromatic substances. The extracts of bacterial cells cultivated in a growth medium with aniline contain pyrocatechol 2,3-oxygenase and 2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde hydrolyase.
