The effect of different collagen types prepared from muscle used as substrata on myogenesis in tissue culture was investigated. Myogenic cells cultured on type I collagen aligned in parallel in some regions of the culture dish and single myotubes could extend for several centimetres. Myotubes grown on type V collagen did not have a normal elongated appearance and were not aligned.
