The influence of milieu and dexamethazone on the phagocytosis of India ink by cerebrospinal fluid phagocytes was compared in the same sample of cerebrospinal fluid from different patients. The addition of phosphate buffer at pH 7.4 to cerebrospinal fluid increased phagocytosis significantly. Acid (pH 7.2) or alkaline (pH 7.6) milieu lowered phagocytosis significantly. Low doses of dexamethazone (200 ug/ml) did not influence phagocytosis; high doses (400 ug/ml) lowered phagocytosis significantly.
