Toxicity of materials routinely used for surgical drains was ascertained in tissue cultures. In contrast, tubes of equal size but made of silicon rubber were not toxic. The toxicity was verified in an animal experiment with routinely used rubber drains producing a substantially greater reaction than tubes made of non-toxic silicon rubber.
