Many patients with urological cancer will need palliative treatment during the clinical course of their disease. Although we believe that radiotherapy gives symptom relief in many of these patients, surprisingly few studies have been published that specifically evaluate the symptomatic effects of radiation. Furthermore, optimal fractionation regimens and total doses are uncertain. Future clinical trials should focus on these issues.
