Use of colon and jejunum as possible esophageal replacements.

When the stomach is not available, the colon or the small bowel can act as appropriate replacement conduits for the esophagus. A short left colon or small bowel interposition is favored for a short conduit. A long, left colon interposition is recommended for a subtotal or total esophagectomy. A long-limb Roux-Y jejunum interposition is favored following a total gastrectomy. The ultimate goal should be to restore the function of swallowing with minimal morbidity and mortality.
