In spiral CT, complete anatomical volumes are scanned in continuous fashion in typically 20 to 60 seconds, with the inherent possibility to reconstruct images in arbitrarily fine increments from the volume data set. In this paper, we will illustrate the basic principles of scanning and image reconstruction in spiral CT. We will explain the technical prerequisites and limitations. Particular attention is given to considerations on image quality and patient dose.
