In spiral CT, complete anatomical volumes are scanned in continuous fashion typically in 20 to 60 seconds, with the inherent possibility to reconstruct images in arbitrarily fine increments from the volume data set. In this article, we illustrate the basic principles of scanning and image reconstruction in spiral CT and explain the technical prerequisites and limitations. Particular attention is given to considerations of image quality and patient dose.
