Until recently, little was known about the regulation of toxin production in Clostridium perfringens. Three regulatory genes that control the production of theta toxin (perfringolysin O) have now been identified. Two of these genes make up a two-component sensor-kinase-response-regulator system that also controls the production of other extracellular toxins.
