Lesbians are often "invisible" in primary care settings and literature. They frequently feel anxious, mistreated, and misunderstood by providers if they reveal their sexuality. Increasingly these women are "coming out" to providers and asking for knowledgeable and sensitive care. This article reviews the literature on lesbian health care and makes suggestions about history taking and health promotion that is sensitive to the needs of lesbian clients.
