The usual diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is determined by an elevated thyroxine (T4) level. Less commonly, isolated increased triiodothyronine (T3) levels are found, especially in nodular thyroid disease. Rarely has hyperthyroidism been diagnosed with normal (or low) T4 and T3 levels.
