Criteria are discussed for evaluating cases in which exposure to rabies is to be suspected. Due to an incubation period generally exceeding 20 days, active immunization can be performed even after exposure. Vaccination programs current in Switzerland and indications for additional passive immune prophylaxis are discussed. In every case, local wound treatment remains essential.
