Nine instructions for hospital pharmacists from the nineteenth century were investigated. They show the pharmacist's responsibility for drug quality and the observance of all legal requirements. He had usually no economical competences. Laboratory investigations and food research were common pharmaceutical tasks. To a great extent, the pharmacist had to deal with accounting and book-keeping.
