[The value of transvaginal ultrasonic screening of symptomless postmenopausal women].

The authors report on their experience with transvaginal sonography of 165 postmenopausal women without complaints. They found 11 cases with an ovary larger than 4 cm, 5 cases with a myoma larger than 1 cm and 11 cases with endometrial hyperplasia. This noninvasive procedure can be performed with empty bladder and is convenient for the patient and at the same time it is suitable for getting more correct gynecological diagnosis, especially in fatty women with a thick abdomen. According to the data it is obvious that transvaginal sonography should be an adequate part of routine screening of postmenopausal women without complaints. This way an early and exact diagnosis and reduction of mistakes are possible and treatment can be performed in time in cases without obvious complaints.
