The effect of pancreaticogastrostomy on Heidenhain pouch secretion in eight dogs was studied. The acid secretions collected at three sequential periods (0-6, 6-12, 12-24 hours) after meal increased significantly in the total amount secreted and particularly at 6-12 hours, p < 0.05. Secondly, after a 15 min initial collection of basal secretions, the animals were fed a meat meal and gastric juice from the pouch was collected every 15 minutes for 3 hours. Basal secretion of acid increased significantly, p < 0.05, but postprandial acid secretion did not increase. Serum gasrin and basal serum secretin levels did not increase markedly. Five hundred milligram of BT-PABA was given together with milk (40cc) and urine recovery of split-off PABA was measured over a 6-hour period. The median PABA recovery rate did not change markedly. Serum glucose and insulin response after oral administration of 1.5g/kg glucose were measured. Both responses did not show any remarkable change. It is suggested that pancreaticogastrostomy caused an increase in gastric secretion, but did not affect the pancreatic exocrine and endocrine function.
