Evaluation of the advanced practice nurse role in acute and specialty care.

As a foundation for the development of a framework for the evaluation of the acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) role, practicing ACNPs were interviewed. Knowledge of the ACNP evaluation process and the criteria used for performance evaluation varied considerably among those interviewed. Findings from the interviews suggest that considerable work is needed in the areas of ongoing and long-range ACNP role evaluation.
