This article focuses on the abilities of a child to understand the treatment given to him/her in an accident and emergency department. Piaget's theory of cognitive development is used as a framework to suggest ways of altering the approach to the child, thus helping to remove possible misunderstandings. This will lead to a reduction in stress and improved care, both for the child and his/her parents.
