Moment-to-moment regulation of sympathetic and parasympathetic neural activities to the heart and peripheral circulation are vital to effective cardiovascular homeostasis. The arterial baroreflex serves as a major regulator in these activities. Consequently, central regulation of the operational point of the reflex may serve as a major determinant of neural outflow and hemodynamic stability in the critically ill.
