In 1983-1990, 256 muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) were examined at four sites near Brno (South Moravia, Czech Republic) for the presence of the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. T. gondii infection was demonstrated in 47% of muskrats from one site with water heavily polluted with municipal wastes and 9% in muskrats from 3 sites with water slightly polluted with wastes, the difference being significant (chi 2 test, P < 0.001).
