Regulation of intrauterine growth: the role of maternal health.

Plasma substrate regulation is outlined in healthy mothers and compared with changes observed in diabetes. Placental exchange of glucose, amino acids and lipids are briefly outlined and regulation by maternal and placental hormones discussed. Fetal adaptation to excess and reduced nutrient supply are shown and fetal hormonal responses described. Examples of how maternal health can affect the offspring in postnatal life are given.
