HCV appears to cause chiefly an asymptomatic chronic infection, which is nonetheless linked to a heightened prevalence of "essential" mixed cryoglobulinemia. The monoclonal rheumatoid factor occurring in the disease may result from chronic stimulation of the immune system, perhaps by the virus directly.
