The hysteroscope is a versatile instrument which can have significant benefit in both diagnostic and therapeutic situations. Appropriate patient selection, recognition of limitations in experience and skills, and adequate instrumentation and support staff can minimize complications. As experience with the instrument and its applications grow, indications for its usage may change. It is unlikely, however, that the hysteroscope will replace other procedures completely. In the future, some investigational procedures may find applications in practice. Passage of imaging systems through the tubal ostia may become a common adjunct to laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Injection of polymers into the proximal fallopian tube for temporary or permanent sterilization may become a routine office practice. Transfer or retrieval of gametes and embryos may find an application. Finally, continued improvement in optics technology may allow direct histologic examination in situ without need for tissue sampling.
