Radiation therapy is one of the most effective treatment for cancer patients. Many developments in radiotherapy have resulted from new technologies or have been made empirically by clinicians. Radiobiology, which provides a conceptual basis for radiotherapy, identifying mechanisms and processes that underlie the response of tumors and normal tissues to irradiation, is the best research way to enhance the therapeutic index of radiation therapy. Raising the standards of radiation dose using multiple fractions per day, treating patients with accelerated radiotherapy to reduce the effect of tumor-cell repopulation during treatment, overcoming hypoxic cell radioresistance, using biological response modifiers, combining radiation and chemotherapy are principal ways to enhance radiation results. Some of them are now in the clinical practice, other are still under evaluation.
放射治疗是癌症患者最有效的治疗方法之一。放射治疗的许多进展源于新技术,或是临床医生凭经验取得的。放射生物学为放射治疗提供了概念基础,它确定肿瘤和正常组织对辐射反应的潜在机制和过程,是提高放射治疗治疗指数的最佳研究途径。采用每日多次分割提高放射剂量标准、对患者进行加速放射治疗以减少治疗期间肿瘤细胞再增殖的影响、克服乏氧细胞放射抗性、使用生物反应调节剂、联合放疗与化疗,这些都是提高放疗效果的主要方法。其中一些方法目前已应用于临床实践,其他方法仍在评估之中。
