A study of the available specialized literature shows that it is not yet possible to provide clear evidence for a direct causal relationship between anticonvulsive medication and skeletal demineralization caused by it. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that such disorders of ossification be not overhastily described by terms declaring the changes in bones to be complications caused by drugs used in antiepileptic therapy. Relationships between the tetanic and epileptic syndrome are discussed by reference to the author's own clinical experience and to the latest results obtained in the field of calcium and vitamin D metabolism, with special consideration being given to a corresponding intermediate group that is characterized by the presence of components of both of the syndromes referred to above.
