Pressure distribution measurements have come into use in the 1930s. The technique started as a qualitative procedure, was developed to a semi-quantitative state and has recently attained a strongly quantitative status. An outline is given of the development of the technique, and the capacitive measuring procedure and its area of application are described. The article is focussed on the adaptation of seats for persons with multiple disability.
