Everyone involved in orthognathic surgery would like some means of identifying the so-called psychologically "bad risk" patient. This article reviews a number of techniques and concludes that, not only is this identification impossible to achieve, but it is probably unnecessary since most patients do well psychologically after orthognathic surgery regardless of their preoperative psychological profile. The few psychologically dissatisfied patients cannot be accurately identified preoperatively.
