The authors study the serum levels of E2 and progesterone in 62 women with endometrial cancer and in 16 with atypical hyperplasia. Twenty women in a premenopausal phase have been used as a control group. In the patients with AH and EC normo or hypoestradiolaemia have been found. A marked hypoprogesteronaemia has been observed, which is expressed mainly in patients with AH. The low concentrations of progesterone in patients in pre- and postmenopausal phase are important markers for increased morbidity. The study of the progesterone level should become a routine method in the group with high risk of development of endometrial cancer.
