This paper defends the track record of CPNs and argues that they have grasped opportunities to develop innovative interventions with a wide range of client groups--despite having to operate in services lacking in overall coordination. It does not rule out a refocussing of services on people with enduring and severe illnesses, such as schizophrenia, but stresses that this strategy will be successful only if community-based nurses are given adequate levels of resources.
